Arkansas Gaining Momentum After Starkel Visit

Razorback Football Razorback Recruiting

The Razorback coaches, players and fan base certainly have been let down over the past few months. While Arkansas struggled to a 2-10 season, the Kelly Bryant debacle and losing out on a few big time prospects on National Signing Day there may be a sliver of hope out there that Arkansas could bring in a quarterback with name recognition.
Nick Starkel, who started five games as a redshirt freshman in 2016, is transferring from Texas A&M and is searching for his next destination. After naming Arkansas and Florida State as possible new homes, SMU looked to be in the race as well. Things have unfolded differently perhaps for the Hogs this time. Florida State has brought in their graduate transfer quarterback in Louisville’s, Jordan Travis. Then, the Mustangs at SMU picked up Texas graduate transfer, Shane Buechele , and are only taking one graduate transfer quarterback.
He was able to take in the Catfish Hole, “The Catfish Hole was awesome. I have never seen anything like that. It was a unique experience. I got to meet the (Arkansas) Super Fan (Canaan Sandy), he was awesome. It was a fun time.”
Arkansas and A&M play in Cowboy Stadium each season in Dallas. What did Starkel think about that? “Oh, yeah, definitely,” Starkel said. “It would be weird playing my former roommates, but that is something that could possibly happen.”
So, the race is on for the services of Starkel. Will the Hogs get him? Hopefully, they will. Mr. Starkel had a pretty good career as the Aggie signal caller. In 2016 as a redshirt freshman Starkel completed 123 of 205 passes for 1,793 yards and 14 touchdowns. His last start was the 2017 Belk Bowl versus Wake Forest, where he was a solidly completed 42 of 63 passes for 499 yards and 4 touchdowns.
If Starkel decides to transfer to Arkansas, he would not be too far from feeling at home. Coach Chad Morris, Joe Craddock and Justin Stepp all recruited Starkel to SMU. Coach John Chavis and Ron Cooper were both on staff while Starkel was at A&M. Former Texas A&M running back, Rakeem Boyd, was also good friends with Starkel during their time as Aggies.
As far as the quarterback room goes in Fayetteville, the depth quarterback could go from Ty Storey/Cole Kelley/Connor Noland in 2018 to Ben Hicks/Starkel/Noland/KJ Jefferson. What a difference a year would make and what a solid recruiting job by the staff if they are able to land TWO graduate transfer quarterbacks.
What happens Hog fans? Stay tuned! There should not be too long of a wait though as he told 247sports, “I am going to process this with my family for about a day, use the 24-hour rule and then decide where it is going to go from there,” Starkel said.
Surely good news for us is on the way.
